9/19/17 Berkeley, CA
In the fourth episode of Sideline Sass, the girls are joined by Joanne Bowers, mother of Cal quarterback Ross Bowers. Cal is now 3-0 on the season with wins over North Carolina, Weber State and Ole Miss. They face No. 5 USC on Saturday in Berkeley.
This is also the ADVICE EPISODE, where the girls weigh in on their favorite topics, offering up advice on various sports things – from tickets to outfits. Joanne also gives women some significant life advice on how to have it all.
Joanne stepped down last year after 10 years as the University of Washington’s head gymnastics coach with a previous 5-year stop as an assistant coach at Michigan. Bowers brought the Washington gymnastics program back into the national spotlight, taking the team to the NCAA West Regionals in each of her ten seasons after the Huskies missed out in 2006 for the first time in school history. Additionally, she sent individuals to NCAA Nationals in seven seasons (’07, ’08, ’10, ’11, ’12, ’13, ’16), the first Huskies to compete at nationals since 2004.
Her husband, John is a former Division 1 football coach and the two have been married for 36 years and have two sons.
The Bowers family journey is an extremely interesting one and Joanne shares with the girls what its like to be a mother, coach and wife – and how she was able to have it all. She also talks about what it is like to watch her son play from the stands and how exciting this year is at Cal as well as how fun the past three victories have been.
